A cleverly set \u2705or \ud83e\uddee paired with a headline in a <span style=\"color: #00ffff;\">certain color<\/span> or in a <strong>bold <\/strong>or <em>italic <\/em>format may make your text more appealing.<\/p>\r\n<p>It is quite easy and it pays off: The Boomerang app saw<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.boomerangapp.com\/2016\/07\/rich-formatting-app-store-optimization\/\">an increase in app page conversion by 16%<\/a><\/span>, after having formatted its description with bold and underlined headlines. So it is wise to spend some time on the looks.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"height: 29px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<h2>App Store is very strict, Playstore changed policies<\/h2>\r\n<p>But before you start dressing up, it is important to understand what\u2019s allowed by the stores.<\/p>\r\n<p>Apple is very restricted in the use of visual elements. Its App Store doesn\u2019t allow HTML or any Emojis at all. Even many<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/stackoverflow.com\/questions\/13448782\/unicode-characters-in-ios-app-name\">Unicode signs are banned<\/a><\/span>. There are some tricks to get around it, for example you may use this \u221a \u2013 it looks like a check icon but is in fact a root symbol. But other than that, the possibilities are rather bland.<\/p>\r\n<p>For a long time, Google\u2019s Playstore was more lenient in this matter,<u><a href=\"https:\/\/android-developers.googleblog.com\/2021\/04\/updated-guidance-to-improve-your-app.html\"> though it changed its policies last year<\/a><\/u>. It no longer allows developers to use Emojis in the Title or in the Developer name. The change was made, as Google puts it, to \u201edrive meaningful downloads\u201c, which is a nice description to combat <u><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/googleplay\/android-developer\/answer\/9898842?hl=en#zippy=%2Cexamples-of-common-violations\">misleading tactics.<\/a><\/u><\/p>\r\n<p>However, in the long description section Google still allows the use of HTML and Emojis. Those users who read the long description are already highly engaged. So a well-designed text may result in conversions. It\u2019s fairly simple. If you want to format certain words you always put these brackets &lt;&gt; in front of these words and enter the right command between them. When you want the formatting to stop, you use the command again but add a \u201c\/\u201d to signal the stop.<\/p>\r\n<p>If you don\u2019t want to wrangle with this, you may always use an<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/html-online.com\/editor\/\">HTML Editor like this one<\/a><\/span> and just copy-paste the code. When having lots of different formats, this helps to maintain an overall view. This often looks cheap. Instead, put emphasis on your app\u2019s <strong>main message<\/strong> and highlight relevant <strong>keywords<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>When creating a list, use Unicode symbols like dots (\u2022) or boxes (\u25a0), Emojis or whatever suits your brand (\u263c or \u2666 for example?) instead of going with the usual dash (-).<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Colors can be a very effective way to draw attention. For example, if you want users to read important information before downloading, <span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">consider adding some color<\/span> to headlines or highlighted keywords. Stick with one color and use it sparsely, except it really suits your brand.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Shy away from everyday emojis like \ud83d\ude02 or \ud83d\udc4d. Have a look at <u><a href=\"https:\/\/emojipedia.org\/\">https:\/\/emojipedia.org\/<\/a><\/u> and find the ones which correspond with your brand \u2013 and if you do not find any, maybe Emojis are not the way for you to go.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Previewing changes on the Google Play Console: you cannot review your formatting changes in Google Play until the updated app description is live. The folks from Boomerang app recommend using an A\/B test and giving the formatted version as little traffic as possible.
