One cornerstone, <a href=\"https:\/\/consent.yahoo.com\/v2\/collectConsent?sessionId=3_cc-session_34c03483-bcc2-4a67-a8ca-6d130a552b85\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">next to the handling of NFTs<\/span><\/a>, is this paragraph:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cDigital purchases for content that is experienced or consumed in an app, including buying advertisements to display in the same app (such as sales of \u201cboosts\u201d for posts in a social media app) must use in-app purchase.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means, when users of apps like TikTok, Meta or eBay want to boost their posts with money, their transaction has to be made via the App Store\u2019s own payment system. Most app marketers will know the consequence: Apple\u2019s commission fee of 30% per purchase applies.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whenever users make a transaction for digital products inside their mobile ecosystem,\u00a0 Apple and other stores like Google charge a fee from publishers. <a href=\"https:\/\/customlytics.com\/de\/these-countries-will-take-a-stand-in-the-global-discussion-about-app-store-payment-rules\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">There are already many legal conflicts around the world concerning this practice<\/span><\/a>, opponents claiming Apple and Google abuse their huge market share and violate antitrust regulations. With the recent move, Apple added <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/10\/27\/23426993\/apple-app-store-rules-guidelines-ads-changes-flexes-control\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">some more fuel to the flames<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meta feels especially provoked and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/10\/25\/23423637\/apple-app-store-tax-boosted-social-media-posts\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">critizes Apple for \u201cundercutting others in the digital world\u201d<\/span><\/a>. Until now, Meta\u2019s Facebook and Instagram apps use their own payment systems to handle transaction for boosts inside their apps. TikTok and Twitter already use Apple\u2019s in-app purchases.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/10\/26\/apples-new-app-store-rules-over-boosted-ads-provoke-facebook-again-.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">According to some experts<\/span><\/a>, the new rules won\u2019t affect Meta\u2019s revenue that much because only post happen inside apps are prone to the new rule. Ad campaigns inside Meta\u2019s Ad Manager \u2013 where most of marketers set up and control their campaigns \u2013 is of course free of Apple\u2019s grip.<br\/>However, the new rule may affect smaller social media networks as well as small businesses and users that like to boost their postings on mobile. Now, the latter don\u2019t only have to pay Meta for advertising but also Apple for its commission fee. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/10\/25\/23423637\/apple-app-store-tax-boosted-social-media-posts\">Industry analyst Eric Seufert concludes <\/a>that in the end \u201eApple is reducing the effectiveness of advertising spend for small businesses and influencers\u201d.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2026 and enhances their own advertising business<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time,<a href=\"https:\/\/searchads.apple.com\/advanced\"> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Apple adds new placements options for ads in their app store<\/span><\/a>. Now, app publishers can promote their products on the today tab, the search tab, the search results and even on the product pages of other apps.<br\/>The latest option caused quite an uproar, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/developers-unhappy-about-new-app-store-ads\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">with developers complaining about quite unrelated apps being advertised on their product pages<\/span><\/a>, among them adult video chat and gambling apps:<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\r\n<div class=\"oceanwp-oembed-wrap clr\"><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">These App Store ads are something\u2026<br><br>Reading? You might also like: Hinge Dating <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lMlgHT0AgK\">pic.twitter.com\/lMlgHT0AgK<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Basic Apple Guy (@BasicAppleGuy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BasicAppleGuy\/status\/1585090997431988225?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 26, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/figure>\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just a few hours after the critique gained traction, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2022\/10\/26\/app-store-gambling-ads-complaints\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Apple announced it \u201cpaused ads related to gambling and a few other categories on App Store product pages\u201d<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<br\/>While it\u2019s unclear how the company will handle this problem in the future, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FOSSpatents\/status\/1583508593193603072?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1583508593193603072%7Ctwgr%5Eab3d08dfb4f67589a756554d6d2ea6f4fe8ae9c9%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.makeuseof.com%2Fdevelopers-unhappy-about-new-app-store-ads%2F\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">a legal expert<\/span> <\/a>brought up the argument that allowing advertising on product pages is basically like a new tax, since developers have to buy ads on their own page to keep competitors from stealing users.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does this mean for app marketing?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While <a href=\"https:\/\/customlytics.com\/de\/eu-law-dma\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">EU regulation<\/span><\/a> strives to tear down <a href=\"https:\/\/blockthrough.com\/blog\/the-walled-gardens-of-the-ad-tech-industry-explained\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">walled gardens<\/span><\/a> of the digital world, Apple raises them and tries to get more money out of the ecosystem inside.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The digital giant claims they are doing it all for the users and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/siladityaray\/2022\/10\/26\/apple-under-fire-meta-spotify-blast-app-store-policies\/?sh=3529fd4f1847\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">for innovation in the market<\/span>.<\/a> However, industry analyst Seufert sees this differently: He observes that Apple moves more and more in a direction <a href=\"https:\/\/mobiledevmemo.com\/apple-to-developers-post-boosts-are-subject-to-platform-fee\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u201cthat resembles the economics of feudalism\u201d<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whatever you may think about the digital giant\u2019s strategy, app marketers should understand the effects: For one, it is likely that boosting social posts in apps is less effective than on desktop, and for the other, you should closely watch how advertising in the app store develops &#8211; and choose the placements with care.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\ud83d\udca1 Knowledge sharing is at the core of what we do.
